Jump Rope Lessons For Beginners

Do you need some jump rope lessons to help you become better a jumping rope?

Well you've come to the right place!

By the time you're done reading this page you'll have enough knowledge to become an expert at jumping rope.

Let's start with the basics:

The Basic Jump Rope Lessons

  • Surface Area - Surface area is very important in jumping rope. The best places to jump rope include wood floors, level dirt, carpets, artificial turf, rubberized gym floor or mats, tennis courts, gymnastic floors, and sport courts.
  • I put my foam exercise mat over my hardwood floor and it works great for me.

  • Shoes And Clothes - This is pretty common sense stuff. Obviously you won't want to wear baggy clothes or large pieces of jewelry. Your shoes should be tied tight, and if you're a girl with longer hair make sure it's in a ponytail. Also, wear a good support bra.
  • Ropes - The rope is also very important. I recommend starting off with a cheap jump rope at first to get started.

Jump Rope Lessons - Body Position

When you first start jumping rope you might feel a bit awkward. Don't get discouraged, it takes some time to get used to it and to be able to jump rope for hundreds of times consecutively.

Therefore, you want your body to be standing upright and staring straight ahead. Your knees should be slightly bent, standing on the balls of your feet. Keep your legs about shoulder-width apart.

Jump Rope Lessons - Grip

When gripping your jump rope, make sure you aren't squeezing it. This will cause unnecessary stress in the hands and wrist. It will also make you swing the rope slower.

Your hands should be positioned so that it almost looks like your giving somebody a thumbs-up. Be sure to keep your entire hand on the foam grip.

When swinging the jump rope, keep your hands slightly off to the side and at about waist height.

The final steps is making 2 inch circles with the wrists, NOT the arms.

I made the mistake of using my entire arm when first starting and my arms got tired very quickly. Using just the wrists will help you jump rope longer.

With these tips you should now be able to jump rope fairly well. Remember that it takes practice, but it's very much worth the practice - believe me.

Jumping rope is also one of the best skills you can develop. For more information on why it's so amazing for your body, visit my jump rope training page.
